Dating back to the eleventh century, the ancient village of Horning is one of Norfolk’s great hidden gems, and is well worth seeking out while you’re exploring the Broads. Sitting on the north bank of the River Bure, south of the River Thurne, Horning is home to some of Norfolk’s most beautiful 14th century church architecture at the Church of St. Benedict, as well as one of the area’s best preserved windmills. Horning is often referred to as the prettiest village in Norfolk, and just a short walk around its picturesque streets is enough to show you why.
Despite its small size, Horning is home to a host of shops, pubs and restaurants, so if you’re looking for Horning accommodation, there’s a lot to choose from. The village is packed with unique Norfolk features, including the Woodbastwick Ferry, which lets you take a stroll through the Bure Marshes, where you can encounter the region’s fascinating bird and animal life.
Horning is a great place to spend a day, with plenty of family facilities including kids’ playparks, electric hook-up for those home comforts, and much more. In our opinion, Horning is one of the truly unmissable Broads destinations, as it really does have something for everybody, whether you’re looking for food, accommodation, entertainment or simply a chance to explore the heart of the Broads.
Thanks to its convenient location, Horning is a great choice of sleepover point for explorers setting out from Oulton Broad. Wake up in Horning, spend the day exploring and then push on to Thurne for your second night.
