As part of the Ludham – Potter Heigham National Nature Reserve, the picturesque village of Ludham is one of the most eclectic and fascinating places to stop in the whole Broads network. For fans of military history, nature or traditional Norfolk architecture, Ludham is a brilliant place to stop and enjoy a picnic. To reach Ludham you’ll need to navigate the beautiful Womack Water off the River Thurne, or alternatively travel up the River Ant. The village’s military heritage is on show for enthusiasts, who can explore the RAF radar facilities and other military buildings.
The village also gave its name to a naval minesweeper, HMS Ludham, so if you’re into military history, this fascinating village is well worth a visit. If you’ve got a Ludham connection, why not prepare for your trip with a visit to the online Ludham Archive, where you can find genealogy, history and nature info.
Sadly, the Bakers Arms pub is no longer open, so you’ll have to travel further if you’re looking for liquid refreshment. Ludham’s appeal comes from its fascinating history, and from its beautiful surroundings. It’s worth pushing on to Somerleyton or Acle if you’re in search of a good pub lunch.
Ludham’s position in the eastern part of the Broads network makes it a great place to stop on your way north from Yarmouth or Oulton Broad, so if you’re planning a lunchtime picnic for your first day, why not stop off at Ludham?
